Researchers will then drill down into the answers to see whether people of varying nationalities, cultures, ages, disabilities, sexualities, and genders feel differently. While city dwellers may think nothing of being squashed up next to strangers on public transport, the study may show that those who live in the countryside find such close contact intolerable.
Or it may show the opposite. Experts say it is such a vastly under-researched area, that they are really not sure what the outcome will be. They may find that millennials are deeply uncomfortable with close contact following recent sex scandals, but older generations may feel equally awkward at modern displays of affection. It has been reported that roughly 65 per cent of face-to-face interactions between parents involve tactile communication.
We are hoping that the Touch Test will enable us to do this, and will help us to inform new research on what touch means in the modern day. S mall studies have shown the importance of touch. Indian Matchmaking sees top Mumbai-based matchmaker Sima Taparia try and find a group of singletons the perfect partner. Dating is never easy but, as Netflix fans saw, it can be even harder for those in Indian communities who often have to get the approval of their parents as well. One woman who was eager to find love on the show was year-old Aparna Shewakramani.
When Aparna was first introduced on Indian Matchmaking, she provided Sima with a long list of what she does want in a man and everything she doesn’t. This included things such as loving travel and wanting plenty of time away from her partner, to sharing her dislike of beach holidays and children at weddings. Sima set Aparna on dates with a man called Dilip and then Shekar Jayaraman who later went on a date with event planner Nadia Jagessar.
Aparna then went on another date but this time with a man called Jay Wadhwani who was from Atlanta. While many weren’t sure if Aparna was going to find someone she liked on the show, the pair got along during their date. She even said how she didn’t “hate” him – a compliment by Aparna’s standards – and introduced Jay to a couple of her friends.
